A 24-year-old man, Anthony Esan, has been charged with attempted murder after a British Army soldier in uniform was stabbed in Kent. The incident occurred in Sally Port Gardens, Chatham, near Brompton Barracks, the headquarters of the British Army’s 1 Royal School of Military Engineering Regiment, shortly before 18:00 BST on Tuesday.
Esan was arrested around 18:30 on the same evening near his home on Mooring Road, Rochester, which is close to the scene of the attack. He has also been charged with possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and is scheduled to appear at Medway Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
The injured soldier was transported to a hospital where he is being treated for his wounds. He is currently reported to be in a serious but stable condition.
Earlier today, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer addressed the House of Commons, saying: “Our thoughts are with [the soldier], his family and our armed forces, who serve to keep us safe. We wish him a swift recovery.”
