In a significant police operation, six individuals were arrested, and weapons were seized following a series of disturbances in Southend-on-Sea on Tuesday evening. Essex Police implemented a Section 60 dispersal order after receiving reports of disorder on the city’s seafront and high street.
The dispersal order, effective until 20:00 BST on Wednesday, grants uniformed officers the authority to stop and search pedestrians and vehicles for offensive weapons. It covers key areas, including Marine Parade, Pier Hill, High Street, Western Esplanade, and both of the city’s train stations.
Chief Superintendent Morgan Cronin emphasized the force’s strict stance against violence and weapon possession in Essex. “We have a zero-tolerance approach to violence, disorder, and carrying weapons. Our officers have already seized a number of weapons and made quick arrests following these incidents,” Cronin stated.
The disorder reportedly began around 19:00 on Tuesday, coinciding with the UK’s hottest day of the year, which drew large crowds to Southend’s seafront. By 23:30, the public had been dispersed, and additional police patrols were deployed throughout the city overnight.
David Burton-Sampson, the Labour MP for Southend West and Leigh, cautioned residents to avoid the area. Similarly, Daniel Cowan, Labour leader of Southend City Council, described the situation as “developing,” noting a “large influx of young people” into the city.
Essex Police assured the public that a substantial police presence would remain in the city center, with ongoing investigations and a firm stance against further disorder. They encouraged witnesses or anyone with relevant dashcam footage to come forward, urging them to contact the force via its website or by calling 101, referencing incident number 1094.
