A group of around 30 patrons at the Blue Bell pub on Castle Street in Conwy were asked to leave after they began singing in Welsh. The incident occurred on a busy Saturday afternoon, and according to landlord Jared Dunn, the singing was loud and disruptive, causing other customers to leave without finishing their meals. Dunn, who has managed the pub for 11 years, stated that the decision had nothing to do with the language but rather the volume and nature of the impromptu singing.
TV and weather presenter Sian Lloyd criticized the pub on X (formerly known as Twitter), calling the incident “scarcely credible” and expressing disbelief that such a pub existed in Wales. However, Dunn clarified that the pub regularly hosts open mic nights and live bands, but unscheduled singing, like vaping indoors, was against house rules.
Dunn explained that the situation was handled by a doorman who asked the group to stop singing and leave after they finished a rendition of the Welsh national anthem. He emphasized that the pub aims to provide a pleasant experience for all patrons and that the request was made to maintain a comfortable environment for everyone.
