King Charles III is set to enhance his commitment to sustainability by converting his two state Bentleys to run on biofuel within the next year. This initiative is part of a broader push towards eco-friendly practices, ultimately aiming to transition the royal fleet to electric vehicles.
The recent Royal Household annual accounts reveal several environmental measures in line with the King’s longstanding advocacy for climate issues. For instance, Windsor Castle will soon feature solar panels, and Buckingham Palace’s historic gas lanterns will be retrofitted with electrical fittings to maintain their iconic glow while improving energy efficiency.
Sir Michael Stevens, Keeper of the Privy Purse, highlighted that these initiatives are “driven by a determination to place sustainability at the heart of our operations and inspired by His Majesty’s leadership in this sphere.”

In addition to the biofuel conversion of the Bentleys, the accounts disclose the procurement of two new helicopters to replace the aging 15-year-old ones. These helicopters are deemed essential for the King and the royal family to fulfill their engagements, especially in remote areas. Efforts to increase the use of sustainable aviation fuel for royal flights are also underway.
While the overall greenhouse gas emissions increased slightly from the previous year due to more extensive business travel, there was a notable 3% reduction in natural gas and heating emissions across the Royal Estates.
Buckingham Palace is undergoing a significant 10-year refurbishment project, with 82% of operational improvements already completed. The project includes installing new boilers, moving water tanks, and addressing structural issues like asbestos.
Despite the setbacks faced earlier this year due to the cancer diagnoses of both the King and the Princess of Wales, the royal family maintained a robust schedule of over 2,300 official engagements, showcasing their resilience and adaptability.
